All A Region Champions

Jackson, Ky- The Wolfe County Lady Wolves accomplished something this past Sunday that has eluded WCHS basketball teams since inception: they won a region championship.  Indeed, coach Gary Brown’s girls put away the competition and brought home the big trophy in stunning fashion.  After disposing of Breathitt County and Owsley County in the opening rounds, the Lady Wolves faced a very tough Leslie County team in the championship game, and it was one for the ages.  The Leslie team jumped to an early double digit lead, and it seemed at first that this would be a long afternoon for the Wolfe team, but coach Brown refused to let his girls give up and kept urging them to maintain the fight. By halftime the Lady Wolves, behind the great play of Hailey Smith and Madison Neely,  had clawed their way back and only trailed by 2.  The second half again saw the Lady Wolves get off to a rough start and mid way through the third quarter the girls faced another double digit deficit; then Allison Stamper happened.  Stamper dominated the fourth quarter, at one point scoring 11 straight points. Her Senior experience and leadership sparked a furious rally by Wolfe County.  The Leslie girls seemed stunned as the Lady Wolves cranked up the defense and poured on the points.  When the smoke cleared the Wolfe County team emerged with a ten point victory 65-55 over the favored Leslie team.  In the end, it was a team effort throughout the entire tournament. It was Nellie Lumpkins, Hailey Vance, and Sara Smith providing key minutes when needed; it was Maggie Creech dishing out assists; it was Bri Colwell, Cala Gross, and Ally Bailey playing lockdown defense and picking up loose buckets; it was Hailey Smith shooting lights out; it was Madison Neely dominating the boards, it was Allison Stamper refusing to lose; it was Coach Gary Brown drawing up strategy, and instilling a championship heart in each and every player; and it was the faithful Lady Wolves fans who, led by the WCHS cheerleaders, cheered loud and proud for their team.

Fans are encouraged to help the Lady Wolves continue their magical run by attending their game at the state tournament in Richmond at McBrayer arena.  WCHS will play Wednesday,  Jan. 23rd at 8:00pm.  A special ticket\tee shirt combo package is available at WCHS for $20.
