The 2010 Progressive Safety Day at Hazel Green Fire Department
The 2010 Progressive Safety Day at Hazel Green Fire Department

The 2010 Progressive Safety Day at Hazel Green Fire Department was May 7th for the 6th graders.  RRVE and CES students attended.  Students rotated through the 8 safety stations that follow:  ATV, Sun, Fatal Vision (due from alcohol intake), Fire, First Aid, Forestry, Seat Belt, and Weather.  Mrs. Linda Patrick did a great job in organizing this event and making it an engaging learning experience.  Thanks to all of the volunteers who spent the day with our 6th graders teaching them safety procedures for various situations they may find themselves in!    Some of the highlights were having a simulated fire and crawling out of the trailer, wearing goggles to show how alcohol impairs your vision, and actually dressing like a forestry firefighter!  Students walked away understanding important first aid procedures and sun safety rules for the summer.  Hopefully, students will make smart choices about wearing seat belts and operating ATVs after learning the dangerous consequences of careless decisions.  With the recent flooding throughout our state, the meteorologist spoke about dangers of flooding and how to stay safe.  Students left his station chanting, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”  At the end of the day, students won prizes donated by various businesses in our community.  Thanks again to all of the volunteers for your helpful knowledge, the great lunch and the T-shirt!
